Carmen Herrera
Painting in Process
On view at Lisson Gallery, “Painting in Process” features a decade’s worth of rarely seen work from pioneering Cuban-American artist Carmen Herrera—who turned 105 years old this year. According to the gallery, “this will be the first time her painting process has been examined and shown publicly, and the exhibition also marks the first presentation of her paintings in New York since the gallery’s opening in the city in 2016.”
Herrera’s distinctive paintings are marked by their radical compositional simplicity. “Painting in Process” showcases the meticulous sketches and paintings on paper that precede these works—and reveals them to be more complex, and masterly, than initially meets the eye.
