"Phantom Gates and Falling Homes" marks Cheyenne Julien's inaugural one-person exhibition at Chapter NY as well as her first solo show in New York.

The selection of work on display includes a series of recent paintings and illustrations that capture daily life in New York City as subjectively perceived by the Bronx-born artist. Across these compositions, background environments offer context for the various human identities that Julien represents in stylized portraits, for which she subtly distorts physical reality to expressionistic ends.

In these pieces, however, pronounced aesthetic details merely enact the concept anchoring "Phantom Gates and Falling Homes": foregrounding Julien's individual perspective, namely, as an artist depicting the place she calls home—complete with the faces that feel, to her, no less familiar.
