Cici Wu's Upon Leaving the White Dust, a multimedia installation piece that debuted at 47 Canal in 2018, commemorates the late Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's White Dust From Mongolia, an unfinished film from 1980. Echoing Cha's process, before staging the work, Wu laid out a storyboard. A selection of its panels is on view here for the first time.
The video component from Upon Leaving the White Dust is also available to stream as part of the show. On-screen, flickering white and grey shadows reflect "light data" that Wu extracted from Cha's footage.
