Louis Fratino returns to Sikkema Jenkins & Co. in a solo show featuring the 27-year-old artist’s latest paintings.
Light from an apartment window spilling across two men in bed, a sink filled with dirty dishes, the reflection of a face in a medicine cabinet, a bird aloft in the night sky: Fratino’s new paintings are like private snapshots, rendered in Cubist terms and imbued with a deep sense of tenderness.
From the gallery: “Influenced by the writings of Italian poet Sandro Penna and works by artists Filippo de Pisis and Marsden Hartley, Fratino looks for an essential queerness that lies parallel to the body, extending outward into a more complete world.”
Louis Fratino, July, 2020. Oil on canvas, 57 x 38 inches.
