Outlooks: 'A stone that thinks of Enceladus'
As the latest edition of "Outlooks"—a Storm King exhibition series spotlighting emerging and mid-career artists—Martha Tuttle presents A stone that thinks of Enceladus.
To construct the site-specific work, Tuttle arranged small-scale, hand-crafted glass and marble components either on top of or scattered near various, naturally-occurring large rocks and boulders on Storm King's premises. In the finished installation, these assemblages rest at roughly 80 separate locations across an eight-acre field: When illuminated, the result is a dazzling, glittering display as light bounces off the lustrous materials. This effect also reveals the logic behind the titular reference to Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons—and the most reflective object in the solar system.
