Samuel Hindolo

“Lip and Neck” marks the debut solo show of Samuel Hindolo in New York, and inaugurates 15 Orient’s new gallery space in Bushwick.

A sheen of white seems to cover the surface of many of Hindolo’s dreamlike paintings. Anonymous figures, faces obscured, drift in and out of the frame like strange murals: in Untitled (2020), two figures box in the corner within a pale yellow rectangle beside toppled and strewn chairs; in Fascination 1979 (2020) an ashen cat is tucked into a dark corner.

In lieu of a press release, Hindolo delivers a poem by Gabrielle Octavia Rucker, a friend: “Last night, I gave your name to the breath of a smoking marigold,/ I fixed a lapsang sugar to feed the yard, ate candied orange rind in the/ street backwards, dreamed a weeping dream from under which you crawled/ unlike yourself but whole.”
