For “Musing,” her second show at Halsey McKay Gallery, Sheree Hovsepian unveils a new series of nearly a dozen collage-based works. At the center of these assemblages are black-and-white photographs, each of which depicts either a partially obscured human nude or a sculptural object with organic origins—such as leaves, shells, and a marble column.

On black backdrops, the prints appear adjacent to actual pieces of ceramic, wood, and string—all situated so as to form various geometric configurations in conjunction with the physical photographs across the negative space of the composition. Walnut frames accentuate the elegantly minimal structural logic manifested within the finished collages.

Sheree Hovsepian, Musing, 2020. Silver gelatin photographs, string, nails, walnut artist frame, 17.5 x 13.5 x 3.5 inches.
