As an online presentation hosted by Galerie Eva Presenhuber, "Positions on Photography" exercises a loose definition of the titular medium through works by more than a dozen artists—including Ugo Rondinone, Lucas Blalock and Sam Falls. While all the pieces on view employ photographic elements, many ultimately deviate from characteristics traditionally applied to fine art photography as a discrete category.

For instance, in creating The Port of America (2020) and Shower in Village (2020), Hadi Fallahpisheh harnessed light to render etchings on photosensitive paper—a process that required no cameras. Artists like Karen Kilimnik and Steven Shearer, while not primarily considered photographers, nonetheless bring the medium into their respective practices.

That said, the exhibition is not devoid of classic photography: from Torbjørn Rødland's glamorous portrait of a Scottish pop star to Wyatt Kahn's moody, film noir-esque series of black-and-white still lifes.

The gallery is donating 10 percent of the gross sales profits from "Positions on Photography" to the Food Bank for New York City.
